Lazy sherpas unemployed

Right now, 1 in 5 students in Canada are unemployed. And not because they are content to be lazy on their parents couch this summer, but rather, the largely seasonal nature of student employment has not been favourable in this economic climate. A recent report released by Statistics Canada says that the unemployment rate for students aged 19-24 is higher than it has been since 1977, at 21%.

Jillian Flake, the Public Relations and Communications Officer for CASA reports:

“Students who are unable to find work this summer will have a much harder time paying for their education this fall, and might not be able to return to school in September ” said Arati Sharma, National Director of the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA).

“There are government resources available to students to assist them during these difficult times,” continued Sharma. “But we are concerned that very few students are aware of them.”

Despite having invested in significant new programs such as the Repayment Assistance Plan and the Canada Student Grant Program, as well as increasing student loan limits, the federal government has not been successful in promoting awareness and information regarding these programs.

“We’ve told the government they need to do a better job of telling students about the financial aid available to them. It’s even more important for unemployed students so they can continue going to school,” said Sharma.

With such a hard environment to find a job, many students are becoming creative with the way they earn money. CASA is looking for these creative students to tell their story to the media. Beverly Eastham, Chair of CAUS and Vice-President External at the Univeristy of Alberta Students’ Union tweets:

Are you a student who has had to take unusual employment/’odd’ job due to economy? Willing to talk to the media? Tweet @uasuadvocacy asap!

8:30 PM Jul 31st from web

Or, you can email CASA’s digital technology officer Sharif Virani at dto@casa.ca

So, have you learned how to spin wool? Perhaps you’ve taken to becoming a sherpa? Maybe you’ve transfered your biochemistry skills to creating heroin in the basement of a Hell’s Angel’s roadside bar?

Hell's Angels

Or maybe you remembered when Bedouin Soundclash played in a sold out U of L Zoo Campus Pub and then saw them last night at the Blarney Stone and managed to become a roadie?

The boys of Bedouin Soundclash

In any case, shoot me a wall post, tweet, email, phone call, text, or otherwise if you have a good story to tell. And for all those unfortunate souls jobless and hopeless for going back to school, remember your financial options are open. Student Loans are always available, and with the government’s new Repayment Assistance Program, paying back that student loan is getting easier.

Happy Sherpa-ing,

GET OUT THE VOTE (Then come party)

All right everyone, results-party

It is that time of year again. Thats right, it is time to vote in the ULSU Elections.

It is super easy. All you have to do is go to the website, log in, and VOTE!

There is literally no reason not to vote. Seriously, if you are reading this, then you can vote. Just open the site in another tab or something. Go. Do it. Now. VOTE!

Voting is open until March 5th at 3:00 pm.

Then, come on up to the Zoo for the Election Results and Big Rock Bash Party.

At 5:00 pm, the winners are announced. Then comes the music. With performances by The Record Holder and Chief Mountain, it promises the be quite the night. Also, there is no cover.

But it doesn’t stop there. At 7:00 pm, our friends at Big Rock Brewery are giving a little presentation on how you can enter to win $10,000, just by entering a contest. Also, you can go the Eddies (apparently these are a big deal in C-town).

All in all, looks to be quite the night. So, come on out, welcome in the new council, say goodbye to us old hacks, listen to some cool jams, and find out how you can win the big bucks.

Not too bad, for a Thursday in Lethbridge.

Saturday afternoon at the office…

Its a rather blustery day here in good ‘ole LA (that joke never gets old, amirite?).

Since its been a while, I thought it would be nice to provide some ULSU updates. So hereeeeee goes, your (couple) weeks in brief:

-  After the sewer system shut down, November 4th will forever be remembered as Poop Day for us Uleth students.

- The ULSU office is wicked busy getting ready for Funk the System (which you can read all about here. Science). Seriously, it’s going to be funking awesome. Two speakers, one funkified night in The Zoo and a week of getting know what activism means to YOU. Our table will be set up outside the bookstore in the SU building cafeteria, come on by, grab a cause ribbon and get to know how you can funk the system.

- It is getting close to exam time, and the ULSU Test Bank is holding a Test Bank Drive the 24th to the 28th. Drop off some old tests and be entered to win a draw for a wicked exam stress reliever pack – filled with everything you could need to get through this terrible time of year. Drop off your tests here in the ULSU office at the front desk. One test  = one draw entry.

Check out the Test Bank online or in person in our office. All test’s are free and for your use.

- Think the current way of doing course evaluations suck? Think they’re just fine? There will be a roundtable discussion held Nov. 18th (next week..) from 3pm-5pm in Anderson Hall 100. If you want to attend, please do! It is open to all University community members – students and staff alike. Come have your say on how things go down here at the University.

- The Food Bank food drive wrapped up nicely last week and our VP Internal, Eric Hawthorne, informed the office that it was a resounding success!

- Just a reminder that General Assembly Meetings are always open to the public.  If you’re keen on what’s going on come down to check it out. The dates for these meetings are listed on the ulsu website.

- Adam Vossepoel got a haircut. It looks pretty nice.

Awesome Sauce.

This apology is a long time coming and is a significant moment in Canadian human rights history.

Bands!

Here are a few shots from our two nights out on the town so far:

So far we have seen 11 bands play over the past 2 days. For what its worth, here’s what I have to say about them all.

Day 1:

Creature – Great band with some funky beats. They really do their own thing, but wow do they rock! They have such a high energy show and a great presence for the stage.

Escalate! – The kind of band you would hear in a high class lounge; their songs flowed together. Awesome sound and entirely instrumental.

wordPEOPLE – A solid six person crew with male and female vocals that blended well. The had some great crowd interaction.
Day 2:

More or Les – These guys were the surprise of the night for me. A killer DJ (she is called DJ KillaJewel) and man could she spin those beats. More or Les kept the club going near the end of the night and played an awesome show with some very quick rhymes.

Crash Parallel – Rock out! They sounded great, but nothing about them was innovative or overly exciting. A great show, high energy, but I am afraid they are competing with a saturated market in terms of genre.

The Carps – Haha! These guys got kicked off the stage but damn they got the crowd going! COCA started them late and didn’t give them the extra time they should have! Boo! But they have balls and a great show to back up their attitude. (They promised to play nice if we ever book ‘em at our school.)

The John Henrys – Yee-Haw! Really though these guys had some very impressive showmanship. Need a good opener out west? These guys are what you are looking for.

Jon and Roy – We meet again! These guys played the Zoo two years ago. Their surfer rock tones are as good as they have been and they have a new disc out! A personal favorite for me and they capped the night off at the venue with some great songs.

Kae Sun – Some great beats. He seemed very political and conscious in what he was saying. He has a larger group, normally, but all and all he preformed well.

The New Cities – These guys did their thing; unfortunately I felt like I had heard their thing before. Fallout Boy, Good Charlotte, Panic at the Disco… the list goes on. Sorry guys, but no thanks.

Dan Mangan – Best show of the night! A west coast boy with a real heart for music. He has such a good blend of folk sound, melodic vocals, and poetic lyrics, look out for Dan to start breaking out big time in the next year. He will need some solid promotion, but man this is the kind of music that reaches deep into you.

Tonight’s show is going to be sick! “Hey Ocean,” “hey rosetta!,” and “The Coast” have peaked some major interest around the conference as well as the funk sensation “God Made Me Funky.”

More pics to come.
