Saturday afternoon at the office…

Its a rather blustery day here in good ‘ole LA (that joke never gets old, amirite?).

Since its been a while, I thought it would be nice to provide some ULSU updates. So hereeeeee goes, your (couple) weeks in brief:

-  After the sewer system shut down, November 4th will forever be remembered as Poop Day for us Uleth students.

- The ULSU office is wicked busy getting ready for Funk the System (which you can read all about here. Science). Seriously, it’s going to be funking awesome. Two speakers, one funkified night in The Zoo and a week of getting know what activism means to YOU. Our table will be set up outside the bookstore in the SU building cafeteria, come on by, grab a cause ribbon and get to know how you can funk the system.

- It is getting close to exam time, and the ULSU Test Bank is holding a Test Bank Drive the 24th to the 28th. Drop off some old tests and be entered to win a draw for a wicked exam stress reliever pack – filled with everything you could need to get through this terrible time of year. Drop off your tests here in the ULSU office at the front desk. One test  = one draw entry.

Check out the Test Bank online or in person in our office. All test’s are free and for your use.

- Think the current way of doing course evaluations suck? Think they’re just fine? There will be a roundtable discussion held Nov. 18th (next week..) from 3pm-5pm in Anderson Hall 100. If you want to attend, please do! It is open to all University community members – students and staff alike. Come have your say on how things go down here at the University.

- The Food Bank food drive wrapped up nicely last week and our VP Internal, Eric Hawthorne, informed the office that it was a resounding success!

- Just a reminder that General Assembly Meetings are always open to the public.  If you’re keen on what’s going on come down to check it out. The dates for these meetings are listed on the ulsu website.

- Adam Vossepoel got a haircut. It looks pretty nice.

Awesome Sauce.

Adam Vossepoel’s hair or: VP Academic Meliorist submission for September

Every week the ULSU executive is invited to write up a little somethin’ somethin’ in the University’s Student opertated newspaper. This week was my turn, so for your blog reading pleasure:

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

September has come and is almost gone and I cannot believe it! To start off, a big up to everyone who came out to Sloan. What an amazing show! I got the chance to interview Jay Ferguson before the concert and will be posting the audio file on our blog. Now, on with some important ULSU info:

Grade Appeals

For those of you unfamiliar with this process, it is pretty simple and quite easy to deal with and I am here to help you out every step of the way. Just to let you know, grade appeal deadlines and info is pages 72-74 in the Calendar (found on the Uleth website) but if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to come chat with me!

Housing Horror

Ever live in a place so unbearable you don’t know how you made it through? Do your friends compare your digs to a post-hurricane municipal site? Feel as if your landlord is exhorting money for you to live in an illegal basement? Well, the ULSU and CAUS is running  “Housing Horror”, student housing awareness day on October 2nd and we will have provincial, municipal and university representatives coming to the Atrium in Uhall at noon to discuss the challenges that students face in finding safe and affordable housing. Come down noon-1:30 to hear what they have to say and ask them questions. We’re are also still accepting your Housing Horror photos to be used as a visual demonstration that day, so please let you voice be heard and submit!

Test Bank

The ULSU runs a test bank program on our website where old tests are available for students use. A great resource and if you have any old tests you would like to contribute please come down to donate them at the ULSU office, level one of the Student Union Building.

CAUS

I represent the Council of Alberta University Students here for the USLU and sit as CAUS’s Vice Chair this year. If there are any concerns you would like to see brought up in our provincial lobbying efforts, please let me know!

Adam Vossepoel’s hair

As some of you may know, our President, Adam Vossepoel has really fantastic hair. This however, does not come cheap nor easy to this boy. He is on the lookout for a great hair product to use to make his locks luscious. We are now accepting suggestions via our blog so please feel free to let him know what product you favor in your day to day hair care.

A little piece of the action

“Thank you Alberta Government”.

Not often enough do I get to utter those words sincerely, however today I do indeed.

“Weadick gave the University of Lethbridge radio station almost $10,000″. That’s right boys and girls, that crazy spendy conservative government is finally dishing out money to those who need it and not just for further oil production. Its kinda nice seeing some payoff for all those tax dollars.

Campus Community radio is very near and dear to my heart and from working in that industry and volunteering for our very own CKXU 88.3 FM I see the direct impact that smaller, independent radio has. With the Internet and podcasting, anyone with a little technological know how can produce a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly radio program that can be accessed by anyone in the world. That is amazing. Most Campus-Community stations operate based on CRTC regulations in the FM world as well as on the web. The advantage of those is – the sometimes dirty word – regionalism. CKXU operates in Southern Alberta and caters to that market. We participate in the South Country Fair, Sled Island, local art and music shows, support local bands, play a ton of Canadian Content and above all employee and support local people.

Yes, you can sit in your basement and podcast to your hearts content, and you can find on line communities to nerd out about radio but the true strength in Campus Community radio is the support of the community. Where else can you go physically where when you walk in you feel like home. For people away from their families, the radio station becomes one. Every time you go on air, you are putting yourself out there. Playing music, giving opinion, hosting a talk show; its all a divulgence of your personality. ‘The Radio’ doesn’t judge or mock and regardless of how bad your hair is (luckily Adam has never had to face that little problem), the station is a community where people interested in life and discussion can come together.

Sometimes its pretty difficult to explain or sum up the importance of these community operations, whether it be a baseball team or a radio station, but really what it does come down to is community. In the oft quoted words of John Donne:

“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind.”

CASA or: How Adam’s hair will handle Halifax

For the next couple days it is just Eric and I alone…No Adam or Brodie as they are CASA’ing up in Halifax where the weather is 17 degrees and partly cloudy WITH wind gusts. Its like they never left.

My only concern for our boys is how Adam’s hair will stand up to The Fax’s high humidity – I’m sure those oh so trustworthy and reliable folks at CASA will do all they can to ensure no major damage is done.

Moving on…

The ULSU executive have been hard at work planning the 2008 first week back to be stellar for all new and old U of L’ers. I highly recommend checking out the ULSU homepage as more information for upcoming events will be posted shortly.
